Europe is easy to travel but her cultures can be hard to access if you don’t speak respective national languages. On similar grounds, it’s not easy for musicians to reach listeners beyond their country of origin if there’s no one writing about them in the global language.
Visions of Zhiva is an online music zine presenting artists from Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland, but also Austria and Hungary and other countries countries are not exactly in the spotlight of international music press. The aim is to support local talents and help them share their music with the rest of the world, to help fans dig out some cool tunes originating in places they possibly wouldn’t think of looking into, and to encourage a more dynamic exchange between various scenes. In this way I hope to help building cultural bridges across the continent, in particular along the East-West divide which is becoming gapping open in the recent years.
Vision of Zhiva is a project by the Berlin-based writer Natálie Zehnalová, who runs the site with an occasional help of some friends. The project started in 2018 and operates on a not-for-profit basis, meaning that the site does not run any ads and does not generate any income. All expenses (domain, small fees to helpers and contributors) are covered by me. If you’d like to support me in supporting young musicians, you can get me my next coffee by making a one time donation at paypal.me/NatLova. Thanks!
If you’re a musical artist or a band hailing from one of the countries in question, I would love to hear from you. Send me a link with your music and I will consider doing an interview with you or writing an article about your work. Please note that I don’t do album reviews on this site.
If you’re a writer knowledgeable about music in Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland or other country of interest for the zine and you would like to contribute, feel free to get in touch for further details.
If you’re a magazine or collective with similar goals, let’s work together! Any collaboration suggestions are warmly welcome.

Zhiva is the anglicised spelling of the name Živa (also Živena, Siwa). The Slavic goddess of life and fertility was worshipped in the region of today’s Poland, Germany, Czech Republic and Slovakia before the arrival of Christianity.
